The dim lighting gives right pep. Subramaniam Siva’s script is rightly complimented by Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score. The violent first half has racy score while the second half is soft dominated by good use of violin as it deals a lot about the love shared between Yogi and a baby.

Ameer as actor passes out in flying colours. He is at his ease right from the first frame till the last. The director in Ameer has given way for the actor, who shakes his legs, emotes and flexes his muscles all through. Equally appealing ids Madhumitha. The actress plays Sulochana who comes across Yogi and slowly develops a soft-corner for him. She plays a woman who has lost all joy in life. Her eyes filled with sorrow and spontaneous body reactions evokes special mention.

Subramaniam Siva has chosen his star cast well. Be it lyricist Snehan who plays Yogi’s friend, Vinecent Ashokan as rich entrepreneur of journalist Devaraj as menacing father of Yogi, all have done their part well.

Yogi (Ameer) is a man who keeps to himself. Born and brought up in Chennai slum, he along with his friends thrives of theft, robbery and occasional murders. Yogi is a youth nut to crack. He had a bad past and keeps it to himself. Yogi and his friends decide to rob a restaurant one night. When they finish their job, they are chased buy cop. Yogi manages to flee in a car. After giving a slip to cops, he gets shock of his life. He spots a baby in the back seat of the car. The human being in Yogi wakes up. He leaves the car and takes the baby with him to his house. He is slowly transformed.
Yogi comes across Raja Sulochana (Madhumita), a young mother who is deserted by her lover after giving her a baby. Yogi convinces her to breast feed the baby.

Sequence of events reveals that the baby’s mother real mother Caroline (Swathi) is desperate to get her child back while her husband Linden (Vincent Asokan), who married her knowing well that the baby is not his, decides to fins the baby and kill it.
Meanwhile a flashback reveals Yogi’s past. Thanks to his father (Devaraj) a beggar, he has had a terrible childhood. His mother ending her life and sister beaten to death by his father on front of his eyes. Though Yogi develops a bond with the child, he decides to leave it to its original parents. But fate has other plans. Yogi eventually loses his life only after reuniting the baby with her mother. The cops close in on Yogi as he decides to give the child back to its parents, leading to a climax twist.

Hats off to producer Ameer for giving a different film, certainly no mindless mass masala movie. But the gory and bloodshed could have been avoided. Subramaniam Siva has liven up the proceedings with a racy script. All in all, Yogi is a brutal yet livable experience on screen.

‘Naan Avan Illai’, a remake of yesteryear K Balachandar film titled the same, was all about a con man Annamalai (Jeevan), who woos girls only to cheat them.The success of ‘Naan Avan Illai’ has prompted the trio- producer Hitesh Jhabak, director Selva and actor Jeevan- to make a sequel to it. This time they have travelled to foreign land where the protagonist continues what he was doing in Tamil Nadu.

A movie sans any logic, ‘Naan Avan Illai-II’ is an entertainer all the way. The lead player successfully cons rich girls and escapes with booty in alien country. Jeevan does what he did well in the first part. This time too he has five girls to give him company.

Annamalai’s photograph appears in a newspaper along with an interview of Maria (Rachna Mourya), who claims herself to be a saint propounding a new faith. She describes him as her God. A mafia-turned-spiritualist she attributes her transformation to him in the interview. This prompts three women to come calling Maria all the way.

The three women were cheated by him recently and they probe Maria of Annamalai’s whereabouts. They Sakhi (Sruthi), Nisha (Swetha Menon) and an actress Deepa (Lakshmi Rai)) try to prove Maria that he was a cheat. However she doesn’t believe them. Meanwhile, Annamalai suffers bleeding injuries in an accident. Mahi (Sangeetha), a Lankan woman who runs a restaurant, nurses him back to health.

On seeing Mahi separated from his daughter by her late husband’s family, he decides to reunite them. He robs money with which he achieves his purpose. Meanwhile, the trio tracks down Annamalai and confronts him. Annamalai goes all the way to a Church where speaks in his own style and make the girls believe that he is not the one they are searching for.

With right mix of glamour and oomph factor, the film would be adored by the front-benchers. Imman has set to tunes six songs with one comprising select lyrics from Vaali’s songs.
Director Selva has penned the script in such a way that it unfolds at quick pace. But it lacks the necessary punch. Majority of the scenes are predictable and hangover of the first part is visible. Though the story unfolds at good pace, it lacks conviction.

Jeevan plays his part well, while all the five girls hog enough screen space. A fun-filled rode for those who love commercial entertainers. ‘Naan Avan Illai II’ is the right destination if you are ready to forget about logic.

A former associate of filmmaker Lingusamy, Panneerselvam’s ‘Renigunta’ is a violent tale on the lives of young criminals. The director stress the need to manoeuvre children well and sends a strong message that criminals are not born but made. Teenage boys turning hardcore criminals and contract killers is no ordinary thing and the need to halt it seems to be the mission behind the movie.

Seemingly influenced by The City of Joy, ‘Renigunta’ has bloodshed, gore and violence almost all through. The young criminals involving in murder and heist sends chill in one’s spine. The director’s apt characterisation and strong team of technician gives sheen to it.
Johnny (son of producer NIC Arts Chakravarthy) makes his debut playing the lead role while a group of freshers including Sanusha, Nishanth, Theepetti Ganeshan, Thamizh, Sandeep among others make up the rest of the cast.

The movie begins in Madurai where a young boy Sakthi (Johnny) leads a happy life with his parents. A shocking incident changes his life. His parents are murdered by an anti-social and Johnny is forced to go to prison, where he is tortured. He comes across four criminals in the prison – Pandu aka Pandurangan (Nishanth), Dabba aka Prem Kumar (Theepetti Ganeshan), Mari (Thamizh) and Michael (Sandeep). They sympathise with Sakthi, who seeks solace in their company. These hardcore criminals break loose from the prison and help Johnny take revenge on his parent’s killers. They decide to go to Mumbai where they plan to become big gangsters. But fate has other plans. They land at Renigunta where they come across Bunker (Bunker), who acts as mediator between contract killers and clients.

At Renigunta, these boys get the acquaintance of Sardar (an influential don) through Bunker. After a successful murder in the town, Sardar takes these boys seriously. Meanwhile, Sakthi comes across a dumb girl (Sanusha) in the neighbourhood. After a few encounters, romance blossoms between them. But the girl’s brother plans to push her to flesh trade. Taking pity on Sakthi, his friends decide to help him elope with the girl, but only after completing a murder for Sardar.

But all plans go haywire when they execute their murder plans. Sakthi loses a couple of friends in front of his eyes. An angry Sakthi turns to Sardar for help. But Sardar flees from the place. Sakthi eventually teaches him a lesson by bumping him off. But did he join hands with his lover girl or not forms the climax.

Johnny as Sakthi has been impressive. His body language and dialogue delivery besides emotions sit apt for the character. Sanusha is not just cool and cute on screen, but has also performed with grace. Among the boys Nishanth and Theppati Ganeshan has been outstanding. He not just evokes terror while committing murders but successfully manages to evoke laughter in few scenes.

Due credit should be given to young cinematographer Sakthi, a former associate of Jeeva. His capturing of the action sequences looks fresh in Tamil cinema. Ganesh Raghavendra’s background score sets up the momentum.

Produced by Mahendrakumar, ‘Renigunta’ is a raw action film. However too much blood and wielding of knives creates a fear in the audience. Had the director cut down on such scenes, ‘Renigunta’ could have been a destination one would love to travel.
